Buying a boat is probably one of the most exciting experiences, especially for marine enthusiasts who have been dreaming of boat ownership for years. Remember that being a boat owner comes with many responsibilities, including the fact that you must title and register your vessel. This isn’t just a smart thing to do, it’s also required by law. Keep reading for some important information about boat titles.
Important Requirements
In Louisiana, any boat used in the state’s waters must be registered with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). This includes sailboats longer than 12 feet and non-motorized houseboats. You must also obtain a boat title for any craft or outboard motor (25 hp or higher) that is financed or currently titled in another state upon registering it in Louisiana.
How to Title Your Boat
The first step in titling your boat is completing and submitting a Boat Registration/Boat and Motor Title Application form. For both new and used boats, you’ll also need to include the original notarized documentation proving boat ownership.
You can apply in person at LDWF Headquarters during normal business hours or you can apply by mail. Other documents may be required for special cases. For example, if your vessel was previously titled or the title is currently held by a lienholder, you must surrender the title upon registering the boat. A new boat title will be issued.
If your motor has never been titled, you must submit additional documents with your application. You’ll need the Original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO), a copy of the invoice, and proof of Louisiana state and local taxes paid on the invoice. Alternatively, you have the option of including a completed original Tax Payment Certification Form (R-1331) from the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
Duplicate Titles
If a time comes when you need to obtain a duplicate of your boat title, you must notify LDWF within 15 days and describe the circumstances. You’ll need to apply for a duplicate boat title and include your current registration number as well as the reason for the duplicate. Your application must be notarized as well. This is one of the many reasons it’s so important to keep your boat title securely stored.
The Few Exceptions
There are a few exceptions to the boat title requirements in the state of Louisiana. First, it’s always important to keep in mind that requirements vary from one state to the next. Always make sure you’re aware of the boat title requirements for the state you live in. In Louisiana, you don’t have to title a sailboat that’s less than 12 feet in length. You also don’t have to obtain a title for sailboards.
If you own a motorboat or sailboat that has a valid registration in another state or country and will only be on the waters of Louisiana for 90 or fewer consecutive days, you don’t have to obtain a title in the state. This also applies to a motorboat or sailboat that is documented with the U.S. Coast Guard. However, if it’s a recreational-use vessel, a boat title is required.
